About this document
Understanding the Autokey Cipher by xativiy256 is a document available to read on EtoBox.
The autokey cipher incorporates the message into the key by using letters from the plaintext to generate the key. There are two types: key-autokey uses previous keystream letters while text-autokey uses previous plaintext letters. Autokey was invented by Blaise de Vigenère in 1586 using a tabula recta. A weakness is that common words in the plaintext may appear in the generated key, allowing cryptanalysis by trying potential plaintext fragments in the key.
