What is Understanding Love and Loss about?
The poem describes a granddaughter who looks at an old photograph of her grandmother. In the photo, the grandmother appears much taller and youthful than she was in real life near the end of her life. The granddaughter remembers her grandmother as a kind, loving person who held her hand despite their different races. Over time, the grandmother aged and became frail, forgetful and passed away.
