This study evaluated six fluorescent vitality probes for their ability to distinguish live from dead phytoplankton cells of various species and growth phases using flow cytometry. The probes included four esterase probes (Calcein-AM, CMFDA, FDA, H2DCFDA) and two membrane probes (DiBAC4(3), SYTOX-Green). Live and killed cells of 40 phytoplankton strains from 12 classes were exposed to the probes. The probes varied in their ability to distinguish live from dead cells between phytoplankton classes and species.
