What is Enjoying incongruity about?
According to the incongruity theory ofhumor, amusement is the enjoyment ofsomething which clashes with our mental patterns andexpectations. This article explores the place of incongruity in human and animal life and the distinctiveness of amusement äs a reaction to it. We are the only species that enjoys incongruity, it is suggested, because we are the only species capable of rational thought. The most widely accepted philosophical theory of hümor today is the incongruity theory, which got its Start in an offhand remark of Aristotle, was developed into a theory by Kant and Schopenhauer (in Morreall 1987: ch.8-9), and has recently been refined by Michael Clark and Mike Martin (in Morreall 1987: eh. 17,19), and by John Morreall (1983: ch.5-6; 1987: eh. 16). According to the incongruity theory, the basic phenomenon to explain about humor is humorous amusement, henceforth simply "amusement," and amusement is explained äs the enjoyment of incongruity. There have been many discussions about the forms that incongruity can take and about the relation of the enjoyment of incongruity to its physical expression in laughter.
