Rahotep, a captain in the Egyptian Desert Scouts, oversees the burning of a village of hostile Kushite raiders along the border. Though some Kushites escaped, Rahotep resists the urge to pursue them, knowing his patrol needs to return to their fort before nightfall. Rahotep thinks of the Kushites as persistent as ants, always rebuilding their villages. His second-in-command Kheti notes they will find a new village soon, but Rahotep is focused on returning safely by sunset.
