What is Challenger Disaster: O-Ring Failure Analysis about?
The space shuttle Challenger exploded 74 seconds after launch, killing all seven crew members. An investigation found that cold temperatures had caused rubber O-rings around the joints of the solid rocket boosters to shrink and become less effective at preventing hot gases from escaping. This allowed the gases to escape and act like a blowtorch, causing the external fuel tank to explode. The committee also discovered that one O-ring had been pinched during assembly, further reducing its effectiveness.
