This study evaluated 23 maize inbred lines crossed with 4 testers to classify the lines into known heterotic groups. A novel HSGCA method was used that considers both general and specific combining abilities. This method increased breeding efficiency compared to SSR and SCA_PY methods. The HSGCA method explained more variation in hybrid yield and was more predictive. It was concluded to be superior because it considers both GCA and SCA effects in assigning lines to heterotic groups.
