Hydraulic jump forms when flow transitions from supercritical to subcritical. It can be used to dissipate energy and for mixing. The depth before the jump (y1) and after (y2) are known as conjugate depths. y2 can be calculated using equations that relate flow parameters and depths. Hydraulic jumps commonly form downstream of structures like sluice gates, when the flow transitions from steep to mild slopes, or where the bed slope changes.
