1) New triaxial stress gauges have been developed to measure the three dimensional stress field in rock using a single overcoring operation. 2) The gauges consist of epoxy pipes with embedded electrical strain gauges. Two variants are used - one for horizontal and down holes, and one for up holes. 3) The gauges are cemented into boreholes and permit continuous strain observation during overcoring while being isolated from drilling water.
