What is Structure and Properties of Skeletal Muscle about?
Skeletal muscles are striated muscles that are attached to bones and allow voluntary movement. They contain many nuclei per cell and are made up of cylindrical muscle fibers. The basic unit of contraction in skeletal muscle is the sarcomere, which contains overlapping actin and myosin filaments. Contraction occurs via the sliding filament model when cross-bridges form between actin and myosin, shortening the sarcomere. Motor neurons stimulate muscle fibers at the neuromuscular junction to cause contraction.
