Remedios Gomez was a woman from Anao, Mexico who joined the Hukbalahap movement to protect her family from the Japanese during World War II. She was given the nom de guerre "Kumander Liwayway". Liwayway proved herself as a skilled fighter and rose to command her own squadron of 200 men. She fought bravely in several battles against the Japanese and later the Roxas government. Even after being imprisoned multiple times for her involvement in the Huk movement, Liwayway continued advocating for peasants
