Merck discovered their drug Ivermectin could cure the parasite causing river blindness. Developing it for human use would cost over $100 million with no viable market as victims were too poor to pay. However, Merck felt an ethical obligation to help and approved funding, eventually developing a pill that effectively cured the disease when distributed for free with WHO
