1) A direct and facile cycloaddition reaction of electron-deficient terminal alkynes with 2,2,2-trifluorodiazoethane under mild conditions is described. 2) This reaction produces a series of 5-substituted 3-trifluoromethylpyrazoles in high yields. 3) Optimization studies found that the combination of CF3CH2NH2·HCl (3.0 equiv.) and NaNO2 (3.0 equiv.) in toluene/H2O (v/v = 20:1) at room temperature provided the optimal conditions.
