What is Wittig Reaction: Mechanism and Synthesis about?

The Wittig reaction converts carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones) to alkenes using phosphorus ylides. Georg Wittig discovered this reaction in the 1950s. The ylide, consisting of triphenylphosphine and an alkyl halide, attacks the carbonyl group to form a betaine intermediate. This intermediate then collapses to form the alkene product and triphenylphosphine oxide. The Wittig reaction is highly regioselective, always forming the alkene with the carbon-carbon double bond between the original carbonyl c
