The essential oils of two Illicium species from the southeastern United States were analyzed. The oil of I. floridanum was dominated by linalool (22.53%) and linalyl acetate (13.93%) giving it a lavender aroma. The oil of I. parviflorum was highly dominated by safrole (68.14%), along with linalool (13.18%) and methyl eugenol (11.89%) giving it a sassafras aroma.
