What is Phase in Classical and Nonlinear Optics about?
In this chapter we expound the optical phase from the classical point of view. In the classical region there are no ambiguities in the definition of the phase, which represents a crucial notion of classical optics. The most efficient use of this notion is demonstrated in classical linear optics by phenomena of interference and diffraction of light and by holographical method of imaging, which is a fundamental optical method. The method of phase conjugation, which is no less fundamental, involves the phase in a nonlinear optical process. All these phenomena will be discussed in this chapter together with methods of phase retrieval applicable when the optical phase cannot be obtained by means of a direct measurement.
