Nineteen genera and 33 species in addition to 4 varieties were isolated from 40 soil samples collected from different places in Syria on glucose-(16 genera and 27 species + 3 varieties), cellulose-(12 genera and 25 species + 2 varieties) and 40% sucrose-Czapek's agar at 45 ~ C. The most common species were as follows: on glucose-Czapek's agar, ,4spergillusfumigatus, ,4. terreus, `4. niger, Mucor pusillus and Paecilomyces variotii; on cellulose agar, `4. fumigatus, A. terreus, `4. niger, Humicolagrisea var. thermoidae and Chaetomium thermophile; and on 40% sucrose agar, ,4.fumigatus, A. niger, `4. terreus, A. flavus and M. pusillus. Truly thermophilic species were also recovered at any or all types of media such as Humicola insolens, H. lanuginosa, Malbranchea pulchella var. sulfurea, Myriococcum albomyces, Sporotrichum thermophila, Thielavia thermophila, Thermoascus aurantiacus and Torula thermophila.
