The kidneys develop through three embryonic stages - the pronephros, mesonephros and metanephros. The metanephros are the definitive kidneys, which develop from the ureteric bud penetrating the metanephric mesenchyme. The kidneys ascend to their final position in the abdomen during development. Normal kidney development can be disrupted, resulting in anomalies of kidney number, position, fusion or shape.
