What is Jerusalem: The Quest of the Sage about?

A novel set in Judaea in the final months before the fall of Jerusalem in the year 70AD. The quasi-Biblical English may not be to everybody’s taste, but it certainly adds to the historical tone of a book that exudes religious and mystical references on every page. The story starts at the very beginning, so to speak, with symbolic allusions to the Garden of Eden and the fall of man. Thenceforth, the protagonist of the story, Epiphanius, is distraught after receiving a vision of the destruction of the Jerusalem. He later learns of his brother’s departure for the city before he has chance to warn him. It thus becomes his mission to go to Jerusalem and to find his brother. During his sojourn in Jerusalem, Epiphanius finds employment as an artisan with the House of Tzedek who abide within the precincts of the Hasmonean Palace. He finds a city inhabited by a proud and avaricious people beset by internal strife. The more he learns of the House of Tzedek, the more he finds them to his distaste.
