The oldest things on Earth are rocks, which cover the entire planet both above and below ground. There are three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rock forms from cooled magma or lava. Sedimentary rock layers together over time from compressed sand, mud, and pebbles. Metamorphic rock was originally other rock types that changed deep underground due to heat, pressure, and time into new forms. Rocks are ever-changing yet eternal parts of our planet.
