What is Impact Of Hospital Teaching Status On Outcomes Of Pericardiocentesis: Insight From The National Inpatient Sample about?
Pericardiocentesis is a common procedure performed by skilled physicians or physicians-in-training under the supervision of specialists. The goal of this study is to ascertain if any difference exists in in-hospital mortality, cardiac complications, or other outcomes with regard to pericardiocentesis performed at Teaching versus Nonteaching hospitals. METHODS: From 2016 to 2019, patients undergoing pericardiocentesis were identified using ICD-10 procedural codes from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) Database. The data were separated according to the teaching status of that hospital. To account for major confounders, the researchers utilized univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: During this period, 80,760 pericardiocentesis procedures were identified in the NIS database. 82.8% of all procedures were performed at teaching hospitals and the remaining 17.2% at nonteaching facilities. The mean age of all procedures was 64 years, 50.6% were males and 69.8% were white. The mean length of stay (LOS) was 9 days and the average total hospital charge was $154,736. The secondary diagnosis of pericarditis was identified in 74.2% of all patients, 34.1% had CHF and
