What is XML middleware to services on STB about?

The potential of the set-top box has accelerated the future of home network. We present in this paper our ideas and implementation to illustrate the benefits of XML as a messaging protocol between the client and the services on the set-top box. To that end, the capability of using XML as the message exchange language and protocol for services residing on the STB are shown by prototypical applications of a CD player and a Lego Controller. The first application is able to access a CD Drive on the STB through mobile devices like PDA's and wireless laptops on an 802.11b wireless network, thus rendering the user with the flexibility to control remotely the CD drive via XML messages. In a similar manner, the other application was developed to control the movements of a Lego Robot.
