What is Transformer Inrush Current Explained about?
The transformer inrush current is the maximum instantaneous current drawn when the secondary is open circuit. It does not cause faults, but can trip circuit breakers. During inrush current, the flux in the core reaches over twice the normal level due to a "double effect". This deep saturation of the core causes the magnetizing current to increase ten times the normal level. To minimize inrush current, the transformer should be connected to the supply near the positive or negative voltage peaks.
