Family functioning and social support were compared between elderly patients with major depression and non-depressed elderly individuals in Shanghai, China. Elderly patients with depression had worse family functioning and lower social support. A multivariate analysis found associations between depressive symptoms and unhealthy family functioning, lower social support, and single marital status. The findings suggest that family interventions and improving social support are important for reducing depression
