Pyrolysis and burning of pine in wind at 357–857°C and 3–18 m/s: The initial period by H.A. Becker; A.M. Phillips is a Engineering article available to read on EtoBox.
What is Pyrolysis and burning of pine in wind at 357–857°C and 3–18 m/s: The initial period about?
In a previous study, single sticks of dry white pine 8-50 mm diam were exposed in a high-temperature wind tunnel providing effective wind speeds of 3-18 m/s. The working section wall temperature and gas temperature were equal, 357-857"C. Several regimes of behavior were identified, among them an initial period in which mass loss is linear in time. This period is here analyzed in detail and correlations are presented for predicting the mass-loss rate and the termination point. Pyrolysis appears to be influential at temperatures up to 745"C and an energy of activation giving E/R = 14270K is indicated for it, in close agreement with independent kinetic studies. At temperatures above 500"C and for thick sticks, the initial period is the establishment period for a combustion and pyrolysis wave propagating into the wood, driven by heat conduction at the front and heterogeneous combustion at the rear, with pyrolysis between. The temperature criteria (500 and 745"C) for distinguishing subregimes are rough; finer discrimination is given by appropriate formulations of the second Damkohler ratio.
