The Cellular Hydration State: A Critical Determinant for Cell Death and Survival by F. Schliess; D. Häussinger is a Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology article available to read on EtoBox.

What is The Cellular Hydration State: A Critical Determinant for Cell Death and Survival about?

the cell cycle (Rozengurt, 1986; Lang et al., 2001). Cell shrinkage supports a catabolic situation by stimulating proteolysis (Häussinger et al., 1993) and gluconeogenesis (Newsome et al., 1994). Some effects of cell volume changes on hepatic metabolism and gene excpression are summarized in Figure 1. Chronic perturbations of cell volume homeostasis are found under pathophysiological conditions. For example, swelling of astrocytes contributes to neurotoxicity of ammonia (Häussinger et al., 1994) and tissue dehydration in clinical settings such as sepsis, burn injury and diabetes mellitus are associated with insulin resistance and protein wasting (reviewed in Schliess and Häussinger, 2000). Cell hydration and volume regulatory osmolyte fluxes also critically determine the cellular susceptibility to different kinds of stress including ischemia/reoxygenation, oxidants and heat shock. Moreover, cell shrinkage via induction of cellular osmolyte release contributes to the development of at least some apoptotic features. This article summarizes recent findings regarding the involvement of cell hydration changes and osmolyte fluxes in mediating cellular protection or cell death.
