What is Hare-Hawes-Cutting Act Overview about?
The Hare–Hawes–Cutting Act was the first US law passed in 1933 to decolonize the Philippines and grant it independence after 10 years. It was authored by several US politicians in response to pressure from US farmers concerned about Philippine imports and Filipino independence advocates. However, the Philippine Senate rejected the bill due to provisions reserving US military bases and imposing tariffs on Philippine exports. This led to a new bill, the Tydings–McDuffie Act of 1934, being passed instead.
