Sketchup was originally created in 1999 by @last Software as an easy to use 3D modeling program for architects and designers. It won awards and grew in popularity. In 2006, Google acquired @last Software and Sketchup after collaborating on a Google Earth plugin. This allowed Sketchup to be released for free while @last employees joined Google. Over time, Google released new versions of Sketchup with upgraded features while maintaining the free version
