now evolve, departing from a traditional framework to take on a more community-orientated profile. Medical education is at present undergoing a period of reappraisal, with a number of schools working towards a five-year curriculum and an increased emphasis on postgraduate training. It seems inescapable that some degree of specialization must now occur before graduation. With the introduction of a modular curriculum, students will be required to choose, in a very general way, between the major areas of medical knowledge at a considerably earlier stage in their training. One must accept that our present medical work force has a structure which is far from appropriate to community needs: there are too few doctors electing to work with the aged or the mentally subnormal, as two examples, while general medicine and surgery are relatively over-populated. It is our hope that in the Tasmanian curriculum, recruitment of interest in the several major areas of medicine will be more appropriately matched to the public needs of the next few decades. ## ACKNOWLEDGEM ENT I thank my colleagues in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Tasmania, who kindly offered their criticism of this paper.
