What is Namakura Gatana: Birth of Anime (1917) about?

Japanese animation began in the early 20th century as filmmakers experimented with animation techniques from other countries. One of the earliest surviving animated films from Japan was Namakura Gatana from 1917. Animation grew in popularity through the 1930s but faced competition from foreign films. Osamu Tezuka adapted Disney animation techniques to produce lower-cost animation for television in the 1960s. Anime gained widespread popularity in the 1970s due to the work of Tezuka and others.
