This book is one of the earliest studies on private-sector experience in the People's Republic of China. From 1949 to 1990 China's private sector underwent drastic institutional changes. It diminished during the 1950s when China was transformed from a market economy to a centrally-planned command economy. It was then severely suppressed and almost totally eliminated during the Mao era. Later in the 1980s the private sector revived as an overall reform transformed the system back toward a market economy. This book probes the causes and social impact of waxing and waning of China's private entrepreneurship. The results confirm that, during the period examined, the role of entrepreneurship was sensitive to the institutional restrictions imposed on the private sector. It is also found that private entrepreneurs played a pivotal role in a series of institutional innovations during the economic reform of the 1980s. In China's transitional economic system, there have emerged plenty of rent-seeking opportunities for unproductive entrepreneurship. The experience has important implications on the future path of China's economic development.
