Established in 2014 by UK-based sound artist and field recordist Stuart Fawkes, Cities and Memories is a one-of-a-kind sonic portal dedicated to the exploration of place, sound, and memory. Except, what the project terms "memory" is really sonic representations of listener subjectivities: re-imaginings of global and topical soundscapes from particular listening positions. The website boasts over 4000 sound recordings to date, 650 sound artist contributors and original recordings from over 100 territories around the world. As well as a soundmap and audio portal, Cities and Memory also features a blog and resources tended by Fawkes and community, geared towards sharing open-source resources from the basics of field recording and gear, to getting started with a sound map, and community-created audio editing tutorials. This active community is akin to an accessible and inclusive workshop to getting into field recording and even features job ads and resources for working across fields of sound design and audio editing.
