What is Beginning Teaching in the Secondary School about?

This book is written mainly for newly qualified teachers but would also be of interest to teachers in training. It deals with all aspects of the teacher's work in the secondary school starting with advice to those about to start in their first post or a teaching practice, and going on to look at the students and the role of the teacher. There are chapters on teaching strategies and class management and the use of time and space. The book also considers special needs, including those of the exceptionally able; the role of the form tutor; evaluation and assessment, and strategies for avoiding stress. The text is illustrated by a number of case studies and each chapter includes suggestions for further reading and a check list for teachers to use in evaluating their work. Each chapter also contains references to relevant research. After teaching in primary and secondary schools, Joan Dean spent five years training teachers in a college of education. From there she went on to headships in two schools which led to an appointment as senior primary adviser in Berkshire.
