To calculate the volume needed to increase run time for a medical gas, use the formula V=(t x S) * ln(P1 / P2), where t is time in minutes, S is average pump speed in ACFM, P1 is beginning pressure in absolute, and P2 is desired ending pressure in absolute. Plugging in sample values of 0.35 minutes for time, 50 ACFM for average pump speed, 15 psi for beginning pressure, and 5 psi for desired ending pressure, the formula calculates the needed chamber volume as 16 cubic feet.
