What is LAP-D Protocol and Q.931 Overview about?

LAP-D is the Layer 2 protocol used for ISDN connections. It is similar to X.25 LAP-B and uses flags, addresses, control information and CRC to structure frames. LAP-D establishes a link between terminal endpoints and the network by exchanging messages to assign a terminal endpoint identifier and set an asynchronous balanced mode. This allows Layer 3 protocols like Q.931 to be used to setup a call by exchanging setup, alerting, connect, and acknowledge messages between the caller, switch and receiver.
