The VVT-i system uses variable valve timing to optimize engine performance for different conditions. The ECM controls the camshaft timing oil control valve based on various sensor inputs to advance or retard intake valve timing. This improves torque, fuel economy and emissions. The VVT-i controller houses a vane on the intake camshaft which rotates based on oil pressure, changing intake valve timing continuously.
