The saxophone is a family of woodwind instruments invented in 1840 by Adolphe Sax who wanted to create instruments that were powerful woodwinds and adaptive brass instruments. Sax patented the saxophone in 1846 in two groups of seven instruments each in alternating transpositions pitched in B♭ and E♭.
