St. John Gabriel Perboyre was a French missionary and martyr who served in China in the 1800s. He endured severe torture over the course of a year in prison for teaching Christianity, refusing to renounce his faith. In 1840, he was condemned to death by strangulation and became the first French saint to be martyred in China. After his death, many miracles were reported at his tomb and through his intercession, including immediate cures of terminal illnesses. He was beatified in 1889 and canonized in 1996.
