Foreign object damage occurs when objects enter a turbocharger through the air or exhaust inlets. Small particles from a damaged air filter or hoses, debris from a previous failure, or objects left in intake pipes during servicing can all cause damage. Signs include noises, loss of performance, and pitting or damage to compressor and turbine blades. To prevent failures, air hoses and filters should be checked regularly and debris cleaned out before installing a new turbocharger.
