Sigmund Freud is considered the father of psychoanalysis. He revolutionized the study of dreams with his work The Interpretation of Dreams. Freud believed that making the unconscious conscious could cure psychological problems. He proposed that the mind consists of the id, ego, and superego. The id responds to instincts, the ego mediates reality, and the superego incorporates social values. Defense mechanisms and life/death instincts were also part of Freudian psychology.
