What is Supplementary Appendix about?
I examine the global expansion of NOCs using a fixed effects Poisson regression model. While the research design aims to investigate national and bureaucratic institutions as potential determinants of NOC investments, it also acknowledges the rich heterogeneity that exists among NOCs. NOCs in the sample hail from 79 different countries, each with its own political and managerial culture, and unit heterogeneity is likely to play a significant role in their major investment decisions. While a random effects model also accounts for unit heterogeneity, it makes the strong assumption that the explanatory variables are uncorrelated with the errors. Thus, I choose to implement fixed effects.Given the count distribution of my panel data, a negative binomial model and a Poisson model present themselves as compelling candidates (Hausman, Hall, and Griliches, 1984). A Poisson model assumes that the response variance is equal to the mean. In many applications, the response variance is greater than the mean, raising concerns of overdispersion. Overdispersion, often attributed to positive correlation between responses or excess variation between response counts, as well as clustering, may cause
