What is Empathy in Marriage about?
## SYNOPSIS Forty-four married couples were administered an omnibus questionnaire. Twenty couples had applied to the Family Court for separation; twenty four were couples in the general population -attending Family Life seminars or recruited from shopping centers. Higher scores on the marital ideals scale were found to be associated with greater marital happiness scores in males only. Higher scores on the level of regard scale were found to be associated with greater marital happiness scores in females only. Males were found to be happier if they were in marriages of shorter duration, had larger numbers of children and were not separating from their wives. None of these variables significantly predicted female marital happiness. The findings are discussed with reference to refining the marital ideals scale and future research into gender differences in sources of marital happiness.
