In it, an American couple, pursuing fresh interests in Brussels, happens into a friendship with a neighborly Belgian countess, a relationship ultimately fraught with personal danger as well as an unintended dredging up of their past marital disappointments. The Americans find themselves harassed by persons apparently out to scare off new acquaintances and isolate the Countess, astonishingly, it seems, over an internationally delicate matter. A young English prince, with whom she had a disastrous, adolescent romance, remembered her a lifetime later in his will, perhaps unwittingly arousing powerful opposition to the perceived implications of her beneficiary status.
