AJA 84 of the face is clearly marked, but the second group has no clearly delineated facial outline, the lid itself being the face. Each of the three lids from the dig reported here represents a different workshop and hand; in the larger assemblage now known lids can be grouped by workshops and hands. Dothan has no doubt that the custom of burial in anthropoid coffins originated in Egypt, where it was known as early as the XII Dynasty, and spread to Deir el-Balah in Canaan in the late 14th c. B.C. Later such coffins were in use at Beth Shean, Lachish and Tell el-Far'ah (S), ranging in date from the I3th to the IIth c. B.C. The earlier burials, through the x3th c., seem to have been those of Egyptians, while in the later group, of the Ia2th and IIth c., the practice of burial in anthropoid coffins seems to have been adopted by the Philistines, "who were first settled as mercenaries in Egyptian strongholds in Canaan by Ramses III . . ." p. 103). At Deir el-Balah Dothan has already recognized both an Egyptianizing occupation of the Late Bronze Age and, over it, a Philistine settlement.
