The period of a wave is the time it takes for one full cycle - from crest to crest or trough to trough. The frequency is the number of cycles that occur per unit time, usually per second. So if a wave has a period of 1 second, that means it takes 1 second to complete one full cycle. In 1 second it can complete only 1 cycle. Therefore, its frequency must be 1 cycle/second.
