Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts to keep his students active during the cold winter months. He nailed two peach baskets to opposite sides of the gym and developed 13 basic rules. The game proved wildly popular and spread across the country and world. Over time, elements like the court size and baskets were standardized, and it grew into one of the most popular international sports after World War II.
