Android 7 introduced File Based Encryption (FBE) to address issues with Full Disk Encryption (FDE) on previous Android versions. This paper analyzes whether known attacks against FDE also apply to FBE. It finds that over half of existing attacks, such as brute force, cold boot, and evil maid attacks, still work on Android 7 FBE. The paper provides recommendations to render these attacks obsolete, such as improved key derivation functions and bootloader security.
