What is 341: The Impact of Specialty Trained Emergency Medicine and Trauma Teams on Trauma Mortality Rates at an Academic Level I Trauma Center about?

Study Objectives: The Taser conducted energy weapon is carried and utilized by thousands of police departments across the country, yet concerns exist for the possibility of deleterious cardiac rhythm effects from its use. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine the cardiac rhythm effects from exposure to the Taser and evaluate for a potential dose response relationship. These cardiac effects included change in heart rate, rhythm, and morphology. Methods: Police officers participating in Taser training and testing underwent 1, 3, and 5 second exposures to the Taser with continuous electrocardiogram monitoring before, during, and after exposure. Blood pressure was measured at rest before and approximately 1 minute after the 5 second exposure. Investigators analyzed the electrocardiogram to determine heart rate, rhythm, and morphology. Paired sample t-test analysis was used to evaluate for differences in measured parameters. Results: 29 subjects (25 male, 4 female) participated resulting in 85 analyzable Taser exposures. Average age was 34 years (range 24 -46, Standard Deviation 5.6) with weight of 183 lbs (range 119 -225, SD 27) and BMI of 26.3 (range 20.4 -31.4, SD 2.76). N
