What is Variations in Earth Rotation Volume 59 about?
In order to determine the effect of water storage on Earth rotation variations, we have estimated the seasonal changes in water storage for 612 drainage basins covering all land except Antarctica. Estimates are derived from monthly mean meteorological data and the UNESCO Atlas of World Water Balance. Over all land, maximum water storage occurs in the late winter, and minimum storage in mid-summer. The use of drainage basins for the calculation permits the preparation of a monthly time series from 1900 to the present for comparison with the International Latitude Service polar motion series for the same period. Water storage time series for individual basins may be compared with river runoff and soil moisture observations available for some basins in order to verify the predictions derived from precipitation and temperature data.
