Countess Markievicz was born in London in 1868 and studied art in London and Paris. She married Count Markievicz in 1901 and settled in Dublin. She became interested in Irish nationalism and joined Sinn Fein and Inghinidhe na hÉireann. She fought in the 1916 Easter Rising and was imprisoned but released in 1917.
